Balfour Academy is an academic enrichment program for Boston students in grades 7-12 whose mission is to assist these students to be prepared for, accepted to, and able to graduate from college. Since its founding in 1983 by Dr. Joseph Warren, the Balfour Academy has provided academic enrichment, tutoring, social advising, and career awareness for low-income, inner-city, predominantly minority children. Since 1983, more than 1,000 students from the Boston Public Schools in grades 7 through 12 have taken part in the Academy program. The Academy's goal is to foster participants' vision of themselves as students who are preparing for college and to ensure that they have the academic preparation needed to succeed in higher education and beyond. This project is consistent with the attributes The Foundation seeks in funded programs: It offers needy youth educational, social, and recreational opportunities, particularly in a six-week intensive summer program and the after school hours, working with each student for four or five years to prepare them for college.
