Foundation History

Charles Hayden wanted to help children in New York City and the city of Boston. We at the Hayden Foundation are trying to do our best to ensure that his wishes are fulfilled.

Since its inception in 1937, the Foundation has supported a wide variety of organizations that work with children. Our grantees range from large institutions supported by Mr. Hayden during his lifetime, to small non-profits formed since the turn of this century.

Foundation Focus

Our focus, however, is on the children we serve, not the organizations we fund. Youngsters who need help in learning how to read, pre-teens who attend specialized programs at museums and universities, and teenagers who are navigating their way through the college application process, are all very real to us. They have real names, real faces, and real problems. Mr. Hayden wanted to help children. His vision and generosity allow the Foundation to continue his mission. We share Charles Hayden’s view that “the future of this nation, and of this world … is dependent on our children, and hope that our grantmaking results in … better and more enlightened citizens, to the ultimate benefit of mankind.”
