Founded in 1893 by social reformer Lillian Wald, Henry Street Settlement's mission is: to open doors of opportunity to enrich lives and enhance human progress for Lower East Side residents and other New Yorkers through social services, arts and health care programs. Henry Street's approach to social intervention is based on the settlement house model, in which human services are provided within the geography where low-income clients reside. Key to this approach is that it is place-based, comprehensive, and participant-inclusive, such that staff often live and work in the same community as clients. At point-of-entry into any Henry Street program, individuals are offered access to our broad continuum of services in the four areas of Youth and Workforce Development, Health and Wellness, Transitional and Supportive Housing, and Visual and Performing Arts. The program site we are requesting funding for under this proposal is Henry Street's Boys and Girls Republic (BGR) community center, a critical part of our Youth and Workforce Development cluster that serves youth through out-of-school-time programming. BGR was founded in 1932 as the Boys Brotherhood Republic to serve at-risk boys in "Alphabet City," the area above Houston Street on Manhattan's Lower East Side. After sixty-five years as a stand-alone institution, BGR became part of Henry Street in 1997, changing its name to reflect Henry Street's inclusive approach, benefiting both boys and girls.
