Rocking the Boat empowers young people challenged by severe economic, educational, and social conditions to develop the self-confidence to set ambitious goals and gain the skills necessary to achieve them. Students work together to build wooden boats, learn to row and sail, and restore local urban waterways, revitalizing their community while creating better lives for themselves. Kids don't just build boats at Rocking the Boat, boats build kids. Its programs engage young people in challenging, creative work; instill pride and self-confidence; emphasize the importance of academics; and provide continuous support and new opportunities over an extended period. Moreover, Rocking the Boat's programs allow young people to recognize the beauty in their own community, empowering them to identify social and environmental problems and develop real solutions. The Bronx River is not just a small urban waterway and Rocking the Boat's boats are not just small wooden boats, but symbols for the possibility of the Bronx and of the young people working to change it.
