Mosholu Montefiore Community Center (MMCC) was founded by mothers and community leaders in the Norwood (CD7)section of The Bronx to provide quality childcare services and supports for low-income and poor families of women who worked in area hospitals, factories, munitions plants, etc.while their husbands were away fighting the war. During our first 17 years, we operated out of basements and storefronts. Because of our agency's effectiveness and the growing need for its services, in 1959 Montefiore Hospital donated the land and with the support of the community, a 28,000 square foot facility was built to provide programs for people throughout their life spans. During the 1970s we also began serving Co-op City. And, in the past two decades we have continually enhanced and expanded our services to meet the evolving needs of youth and families in our home community and in other poverty areas of The Bronx. Today, College Bound and youth employment programs serve youth from all over The Bronx. Children and youth comprise 80% of the 28,000 people served annually and Latinos and African-Americans comprise 90% of the program participants. Although specific initiatives have changed over the years, all MMCC programs and services have always been closely aligned with our mission - to assist and empower the most vulnerable members of our community. Our mission statement proclaims, "in a city torn apart by racism, anti-Semitism, ethnic isolation, drugs, poverty, unequal opportunities for people with disabilities, poor health and educational deficiencies, our Community Center serves as a light in the darkness, welcoming all members of the community, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation or disabilities to come together in a spirit of friendship, to work together to pursue common goals and interests. We are here to help make our neighborhoods a better place to live for everyone. We are open to all." We also stress religious, racial, ethnic and cultural respect for all groups and for individuals with disabling conditions as well as those of all sexual orientations who use the community center and all of our programs.
