For 55 years, East Harlem Tutorial Program (EHTP) has provided a safe, supportive learning environment for youth. EHTP gives youth access to educational resources that are not available in their schools, all the while providing encouragement and social support from caring adults who serve as educators, role models, and mentors. EHTP began in 1958 as a children's reading group hosted by community member Helen Webber in her living room; it has since grown into a multi-site after-school program for traditional public school students and a public charter school operator focused on significantly increasing the college graduation rate in East Harlem. More than 15,000 East Harlem youth and their families have walked through our doors and through our programs they have improved their academic skills, developed confidence, and found community. Currently, EHTP serves over 500 students in grades K-12, so that more young people in East Harlem than ever before can benefit from an EHTP education.
