The Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health (AAIUH) is a multipurpose organization started in 1992 as a partnership between Arthur Ashe, the renowned tennis player and humanitarian, and SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Our mission is to reduce health disparities and improve health outcomes for underserved groups by: 1) conducting community-based behavioral interventions that address health conditions impacting multi-ethnic communities in trusted ocmmunity settings; and 2) exposing middle school and high school students from underrepresented minority groups to careers in medicine, science, public health, and allied science through the Health Science Academy (HSA). Since the start of AAIUH in 1992, we have worked with trusted venues (i.e. barbershops, beauty salons, faith-based organizations, public housing, and tattoo salons) in the surrounding area of Central Brooklyn to provide evidence-based risk-reduction health messages, health screenings, and health workshops. Two years later in 1994, the HSA, a three-year academic science enrichment program, was established to address the shortage of minorities in the healthcare field. In partnership with SUNY Downstate Medical Center, 12 high schools as well as three middle schools located in Brooklyn, we offer low-income and minority students an after-school STEM enrichment program that focuses on increasing their comprehension and interest in human anatomy and physiology, urban health issues (e.g. health disparities and medical ethics), and the fundamentals of research. In 2010, we started the Health Careers Opportunities Program which exposes middle school students to health career clusters and pathways through ten 45-mimnute sessions. In Spring 2012, the HCOP Ninth Grade Bridge program was implemented to introduce ninth graders intersted in the health sciences to the HSA. During the 10-week program studetns participate in weekly two-hour labs and lectures related to anatomy and physiology. All of our services are provided at no cost to the participant.
