University Settlement, founded in 1886, is the oldest settlement house in the country and is dedicated to improving the life circumstances of low-income people and the communities in which they live University Settlement's mission is to empower residents by building on their strengths and knowledge through comprehensive, quality services that meet the current needs of the community, innovative programs that anticipate future needs, and advocacy on behalf of the community and its residents. Located on New York's Lower East Side, the Settlement assists immigrants and other low-income people with a full network of programs. These include adult literacy classes, mental health counseling, group and family day care, case management for the formerly homeless, recreational and educational activities for school children, a summer day camp, a senior center, an arts program, and a credit union. More than 10,000 people utilize these programs every year. University Settlement has been recognized nationwide as a model for the delivery of comprehensive social services.
