For over 36 years HMI has been developing desperately needed services and pioneering best practices that respond to the unique challenges faced by at-risk LGBTQ youth. These include, but are not limited to mental illness, poor physical health, trauma, hunger, homelessness, HIV infection and substance abuse. As stated above, HMI believes that all young people regardless of sexual orientation or identity deserve a safe and supportive environment in which to achieve their full potential. Sadly, LGBTQ youth face debilitating challenges that are overwhelmingly disproportionate compared to their heterosexual peers. In response, HMI serves at-risk LGBTQ youth between the ages of 13-24 and their families, nearly all of whom come from low-income communities and experience pervasive societal stigma. They are disconnected from traditional support systems, resulting in social, education and economic barriers that negatively impact their lives. Today, HMI is the nation's oldest and largest LGBTQ youth service nonprofit. We serve more than 2,000 at-risk youth each year from over 350 zip codes in New York, Newark/New Jersey and beyond, while engaging an additional 12,000 via outreach efforts and countless others through our advocacy initiatives. We give these young people a safe and supportive environment that fosters healthy youth development with programs that promote mental health and physical well-being, emotional resilience, academic achievement, job readiness, and artistic/cultural creativity. We do this in ways that embody our profound belief in these young people, deep respect for who they are and confidence in their untapped abilities.
